Housing & Charity Work
Welcome to my webpage about my charitable work.
Since leaving full-time employment in June 2019, I have taken up doing charity work by long-distance cycling. So far this has been focused on various charities in te UK and the Fuller Center for Housing, a christian housing charity based in America, but building homes around the world.
In June, July and August 2019, I cycled across America from Seattle to Washington DC (3,500 miles) to raise funds for this charity. On the way, we improved 19 homes, in conjunction with local Fuller Center partners. It was an experience of a lifetime with many great, new friendships created!
In October 2019, I had the privilege of helping to build 11 homes in 1 week in Beauregard, Lee County Alabama, under the Millard Fuller Legacy Build. Beauregard was devastated by a massive tornado in March 2019 when 23 people died in one night. I worked with some of my cycling colleagues to help build one of these homes and help build hope, as well as homes into a shattered community.
The events of 2020 and 2021 were shaped by the global Covid 19 pandemic and closed borders
In 2022, I undertook two rides for the Fuller Center with the Gulf Coast in the spring and then South to North from the Gulf of Mexico to The Lakes - New Orleans to Cleveland, in the summer. After finishing the ride in Cleveland and I then spent some time with friends - doing yet more bike riding!! Then in September Elaine and I hosted 16 people from America and facilitated some ride here in England
In May/June 2023, I rode up the East Coast from Georgia to Maine, along with a reunion ride in Ohio in August.
In July 2024 I cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats with a couple of friends and rose yet more funds for charities, then in August I hosted 27 of my great American friends in South West Ireland. Life is good!
2025 was one of my busiest years on the bike with 3 international rides. France in March, with my neighbour Mike, USA West Coast in the summer and, finally, Portugal in September, along with another building week crating 6 new homes near Braga. 2025 also saw me complete my first lap of the globe as I reached in over 24,000 miles since 2019.
2026 will see me ride around 4 of the 5 Great lakes between Canada and the USA from Fargo in North Dakota and finishing at the Niagara Falls in New York State. By then I will then have cycled in 39 of the 50 states in America (78%)
In total I have now raised some $21,000 for the housing charity and some £18.000 in total across all the charities.
